On Thursday and Friday, April 12 & 13, 2007, in the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on the Catawba College campus,  the Catawba College Theatre Arts program will present a series of one acts that serve both as a part of the Theatre Arts regular season and the culmination of the Department's Directing 2 studio class. This year's offerings include three comedies:

• Wasp by Steve Martin, directed by junior Jeremy Kinser of Matthews with Theatre Arts students: sophomore Aaron Ganas of Milwaukee, Wis.; sophomore Gracie Greenbaum of Tolland, Conn.; freshman Amber Hughes of Seattle, Wash.; sophomore Justin Lewis of Knoxville, Tenn.; and senior Jessica Taige of Wauwatosa, Wis.

• The Lover by Harold Pinter, directed by junior Aly Perez of Waldorf, Md., with Theatre Arts students: freshman Robby Lutfy of Charlotte; junior Andy McCain of Mequon, Wis.; and junior Guerin Piercy of Swannanoa.

• FM  by Romulus Linney, directed by junior Zach Stinnett of High Point with Theatre Arts students: sophomore Nicole Durant Fairview; senior Caitlin Heinen of Wauwatosa, Wis.; freshman Amanda Lederer of Bradenton, Fla.; and senior Jordan Richards of Hendersonville.

The productions are free and open to the public and all three will run in succession each night beginning at 7:30 p.m. The nightly program will last approximately two and a half hours and patrons will be admitted between productions. Several of the productions contain adult language and material and are not suitable for children.

On Thursday and Friday, April  24 and 25, 2008, in the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on the Catawba College campus,  the College Theatre Arts Department will present a series of One Acts that serve both as a part of the Theatre Arts' regular season and the culmination of the Department's Directing 2 studio class. This year's offerings include:

The Universal Language: Directed by Sara Johnson of Charlotte, N.C., this romantic comedy chronicles the relationship between Don, the teacher of Unamunda, and Dawn, his student. TheEvents that occur during the course of this one act help the characters discover aspects of their personalities that they never knew existed. A "Linkwa Supreemka" is the means by which Don and Dawn find an amplifier for their metaphorical "tuning fork" existences.  Cast members include Justin Lewis of Knoxville, Tenn., as Don; Caitlin Becka of Wilmington, N.C., as Dawn; and Mike Matthias of Georgetown, Del., as the Young Man.

The Boundary: This one-act comedy by Tom Stoppard and Clive Exton which was originally written, rehearsed, and performed as a teleplay for the BBC within a week's time in 1975. Directed by Guerin Piercy of Asheville, N.C., its plot revolves around two lexicographers, Johnson and Bunyans, who enter their library to find it in complete disarray. As they reassemble their life's work, they uncover much more about their lives than definitions on slips of paper, including the whereabouts of Johnson's wife Brenda, the team's typist, and the strange significance of the cricket game happening outside. Full of wordplay, "The Boundary" is sure to have audiences laughing as they watch two extreme characters realistically try to reassemble their lives in a hyper-realistic world. Cast members include Mike Mathias of Georgetown, Del., as Operator and Cricket Player; Jen Short of Jersey City, N.J., as Brenda; Jeremy Kinser of Charlotte, N.C., as Bunyans; Justin Johnson of Fuquay Varina, N.C., as Johnson. Jordan Danz of Mequon, Wis., serves as stage manager for the production.

Life under Water: Written by Tony Award winning playwright Richard Greenberg, "Life under Water" tells the story of a handful of rich socialites summering in the Hamptons and struggling with their personal demons. Although they fight to stay above sea level, these privileged characters get sucked into the current of recklessness and show little care for the people who are destroyed in their wake. The play acts as a window into this unreachable world, packed with witty sarcasm and tragic hopelessness. Directed by Betsy Foster of Baltimore, Md., cast members include Amanda Lederer of Bradenton, Fla., as Amy-Joy; Carrie Foster of Baltimore, Md., as Amy-Beth; Chris Herring of Oakboro, N.C. as Kip; Sarah Koerner of Rocky Mount, N.C., as Jinx; and Aaron Ganas of Milwaukee, Wis., as Hank.

The One Acts Festival is free and open to the public and all three plays run in succession each night beginning at 6:30 p.m. The nightly program will last approximately one and a half hours and patrons will be admitted between the plays.
