Catawba College announced today that women's lacrosse is being added to its athletics program. The announcement was made by Dr. W. Craig Turner, president, and Dennis Davidson, director of athletics.

With the addition of lacrosse, which will begin play in the 2011-12 school year, Catawba will field nine varsity women's sports. The new lacrosse program will join a women's athletic program which also includes soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, swimming, tennis, softball and golf.

"We are very excited about the addition of women's lacrosse at Catawba College," said Davidson. "We already have men's lacrosse so the new women's program should feel right at home. However, our fans who have seen the men's games will quickly notice the subtle differences in the sport of women's lacrosse."

Catawba added men's lacrosse in 1994 and the team is one of nine programs on the men's side. The others are football, soccer, cross country, basketball, swimming, baseball, tennis and golf.

Catawba also has a cheerleading program, which is coed.

The men's lacrosse program competes in the Deep South Conference, which includes Wingate, Mars Hill and three schools from Florida (St. Leo, Florida Southern and Rollins). Lenoir-Rhyne is scheduled to field lacrosse (men and women) teams this year.

While the women's lacross program will begin as an independent, Davidson said, the nearby Conference Carolinas has eight women's lacrosse programs, which should lead to scheduling opportunities for Catawba's new program.

Davidson said that a search for a women's lacrosse coach will be conducted this summer. Peter Bourque has been the only head coach for Catawba in the 16-year history of the men's program.
