Marching bands from Rowan and surrounding counties will visit the Catawba College campus on Saturday, October 13 to compete in the Second Annual Lord Salisbury Marching Band Classic.

Fifteen marching bands, representing 10 school districts in the state, have registered to participate in the competition which runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Oct. 13th in Catawba's Shuford Stadium. Bands include Walter M. Williams High School, Burlington; North Stanly High School, Stanly County; Ashe High School, Ashe County; South Caldwell High School, Caldwell County; Western Guilford High School, Guilford County; West Rowan High School, Rowan County; Piedmont High School, Union County; Salisbury High School, Rowan County; Davie County High School, Davie County; West Stokes High School, Stokes County; North Rowan High School, Rowan County; Jesse Carson High School, Rowan County; Porter Ridge High School, Union County; and Ledford High School, Davidson County.

The event is sponsored by the Catawba College Chapter 1002 of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference, assisted by various campus Student Government Associations, and by the West Rowan High School Band and Band Boosters organization. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12.

The bands will be categorized according to size division – smallest to largest (A; AA; AAA; and AAAA), according to the number of wind instruments in each. Bands will perform their marching shows in order to receive critiques and ratings from a professional judging staff in the areas of Music Execution, Marching Execution, General Effect, Drum Majors, Percussion, and Color Guard. Each size division will be awarded a first, second or third place trophy for their ratings, and are eligible for the coveted Lord Salisbury Cup, which is presented to the highest overall rating for the day, regardless of class size.

The contest will begin with the National Anthem performed by Catawba College music majors. Concessions, including grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, soft drinks, bottled water, candies, popcorn and other items, will be on sale throughout the event. Programs containing information about each band and its personnel will also be available for sale.

Last year's Lord Salisbury Marching Band Classic's inaugural Cup was awarded to the Ledford High School Panther Regiment which is returning to the competition this year.
