Catawba College's Business Advisory Board for the Ketner School of Business has a new chair.  Robert M. Van Geons, CEcD., executive director of the Salisbury–Rowan Economic Development Commission since January of 2008, succeeds Joey Popp as chair of the 30-member board.

Van Geons, who has served as vice chair of the Business Advisory Board since 2008, has over 10 years of experience in economic development, land use planning, grant writing and public policy.  He currently serves as chair of the advisory council for the 16-county, bi-state "Charlotte Regional Partnership" and a member of numerous organizations such as the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR).

A 1997 Catawba College alumnus, Van Geons earned his Master's of Science degree in Economic Development from the University of Southern Mississippi and is one of only 1,200 economic development practitioners to have achieved the CEcD designation, the highest level of professional certification in this field.

The Business Advisory Board formed in late 2006 as a way for local and regional business professionals to offer assistance to the Ketner School of Business.  Members of the board have been instrumental in developing internships and contacts for Catawba College business students as well as serving as mentors for these students.   Some board members have also made time to speak to various classes at the institution.

A vice chair to succeed Van Geons on the Business Advisory Board will be named at the Board's fall meeting, slated Sept. 17.
