It's a great week for music lovers in Salisbury. Two outstanding musicians from the Catawba College faculty are offering free recitals in one week.

On Wednesday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on the Catawba College campus, woodwind player Jack Murray will perform works by Benjamin Britten, Steven Harlos, and others. Murray has played saxophone, clarinet, flute, and oboe in Broadway shows, symphony orchestras, jazz and rock bands, as well as in the recording studio. He has toured with the Four Tops and the Temptations, and has appeared with numerous popular artists, including Natalie Cole, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Mathis, Linda Ronstadt, and a host of others.
Murray performed with Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Ladies" 1999/2000 European Tour with Dee Dee Bridgewater and Freda Payne. Most recently he performed "Chicago" with Gregory Harrison, "The Full Monty", "South Pacific" with Robert Goulet, "Kiss Me Kate" with Rex Smith and Rachel York, and "Damn Yankees" with Jerry Lewis. In 1994, Murray was named Most Outstanding Saxophone Performer at the Mobile Jazz Festival.

On Friday, September 24, at 3:00 p.m., also in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel, Dr. Rob Hallquist, a noted classical pianist, will perform the Prelude and Fugue in E Minor, Opus 35, No. 1, by Felix Mendelssohn; the first movement of the Sonata in B Minor, Opus 58, by Fryderyk Chopin; and the Symphonic Etudes, Opus 13, by Robert Schumann.
Born in Connecticut and raised in Louisiana, Hallquist holds three degrees in piano performance: a bachelor's from Centenary College, a master's from Indiana University, and a doctorate from the University of North Texas. Before coming to Catawba, he served as professor of piano at Mercer University and at the University of Northern Colorado, and he spent eight years as Director of UNC's School of Music before moving to the piedmont.
Hallquist has performed on Georgia Public Television and on Chicago radio station WFMT's famed "Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts." With cellist James Fittz, he toured southern China, and he performed an early version of Robert Schumann's Symphonic Etudes for the Robert-Schumann Gesellschaft of Zwickau, Germany in 2003. He has also performed as concerto soloist with the Greeley Chamber Orchestra, the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, the Macon Symphony Orchestra, the Shreveport Summer Festival Orchestra, and the University of Northern Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
