Catawba College first-year students were treated to a special Candy Bar reception at the President's House during their first month on campus. Sweet treats, all in shades of blue and white — Catawba's school colors, greeted the students when they arrived at the home of Catawba President and First Lady Brien and Laura Lewis.
The students arrived in waves on one of three different September dates and were surprised with reception fare that was particularly to their liking. There were blue Gummie Sharks, blue and white jelly beans and M&Ms, white and blue candy canes, white chocolate pretzels, Nestle's Crunch bars and Almond Joy Bars, and even a special blue punch. Also on hand were small plastic bags available for those candy-loving students who wanted to pack some to go.
The first-year students are enrolled in one of 20 different sections of a First-Year Seminar. They attended the receptions on one of three dates, September 8, September 15 or September 22, as one component of their First-Year Experience at the college.
First Lady Laura Lewis credited her daughter, 14-year-old Anna Louise, with the Candy Bar idea. She added that this special sort of reception at the President's House will not be duplicated for other groups, but will be reserved especially for Catawba's first-year students in future years.
