New contracts with both a soft drink vendor and a snack foods vendor have resulted in new Energy Star rated machines on campus at Catawba College. The new contracts, with Pepsi for soft drinks and Executive Vending for snacks, went into effect January 1st.
According to Catawba's Dean of Students Dan Sullivan, the vendors' willingness to provide the Energy Star rated machines was a strong point in the contract negotiations and will contribute to Catawba's ongoing greening efforts on campus. The new machines replace some that were up to 20 years old on campus and should assist in significantly reducing energy usage costs.
Sullivan said that in February the snack foods vending machines will also have LED lighting installed in them to further contribute to energy savings. The new snack foods vending machines also feature i-vend technology that employs a laser to monitor vending errors, thereby reducing the instances of lost money and product hand-ups in the machines.
