The Catawba College Music Department will present the 11th annual Pops Concert on at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005 in the Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus.   All That Jazz is a concert of popular, jazz, and swing selections by the Catawba Singers and Madrigals, directed by Rosemary C. Kinard.

The Catawba Singers and Catawba Madrigals are both select choral ensembles whose members are chosen by audition.   They perform for college and communityEvents, and for several major concerts each year.   In addition, the Singers travel to area churches to present sacred concerts, and the Madrigals perform each year as special guests of the Carolina Renaissance Festival in the fall.

In this year’s concert, the Madrigals will perform several selections based on words taken from popular plays by William Shakespeare.   They will conclude their segment with two versions of the famous madrigal, “My Bonny Lass.”   The first is the original by Sir Thomas Morley, and the second is a hilarious take-off on the piece by the satirical P.D.Q. Bach.

The Singers will begin their segment with a lively arrangement of   “I’ve Got the Sun in the Morning” from Annie Get Your Gun by Irving Berlin.   Other selections will include “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Almost Like Being in Love,” “Luck Be a Lady,” “All That Jazz,” “Feelin’ Groovy,” “Send in the Clowns,” “Embraceable You,” “For Good” from the new hit musical Wicked, and the song made famous by the late Bobby Darin, “Mack the Knife.”   In their performance, the Singers will pay tribute to composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Stephen Sondheim, Paul Simon, and Stephen Schwartz.   And a special salute to Catawba’s graduating seniors will feature Courtney Thurston and Drew Long in “Two of a Kind.”   Members of the group will also be spotlighted as soloists or members of small ensembles.   Accompanist for the Singers is Tina Brown, and percussionist is Andrew Boudouris.

Delicious refreshments will be for sale during the intermission.   Student members of the Catawba Student Music Educators and the Music Entertainment Industry Student Association will be on hand to serve audience members as part of a fund-raiser for their organizations.
