The Catawba College Music Department will present the 12th annual Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2006, in the Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus. Seasons of Love is a concert of popular, jazz, and swing selections by the Catawba Singers and Madrigals, directed by Rosemary C. Kinard, assistant professor of music at Catawba.

The Catawba Singers and Catawba Madrigals are both select choral ensembles whose members are chosen by audition. They perform for college and communityEvents, and for several major concerts each year. In addition, the Singers travel to area churches to present sacred concerts, and the Madrigals perform each year as special guests of the Carolina Renaissance Festival in the fall.

In this year’s concert, the Madrigals will perform selections by early music composers John Dowland and Henry Purcell. The Madrigal women will then be featured in a unique take-off on the traditional children’s folk song, "Three Blind Mice."  

The Singers will begin the second segment of the program with a lively arrangement of   "Comedy Tonight" from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by Stephen Sondheim. Student conductor for the opener will be senior and president of the Catawba Singers, Brian Messenger of Kannapolis.     Other selections will include "Suddenly Seymour" from Little Shop of Horrors, "Over the Rainbow" and "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge, "Maria" from West Side Story, "Mr. Cellophane" from Chicago, the barbershop favorite "Coney Island Baby," "Send in the Clowns," and "Popular" from the hit musical, Wicked, and the song made famous by the late Ray Charles, "Georgia on My Mind," featuring senior class president Jeffery Smith of Newnan, Ga.. In their performance, the Singers will pay tribute to composers such as Stephen Sondheim, James Taylor, Duke Ellington, John Kander, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, Stephen Schwartz, and Leonard Bernstein. And a special salute to our graduating seniors will feature Kelly Flick of Newport News, Va., Brian Messenger, Chris Myers of Lewes, Del., Briana Raymond of Spring Hill, Fla., and Jeffery Smith in the famous "Seasons of Love’ from the hit musical and movie, Rent. Members of the Catawba Singers will also be spotlighted as soloists or members of small ensembles. Accompanist for the Singers is Tina Brown, and percussionist is Jennie Brooks. Student accompanist for two of the soloists will be Chris Myers.   Special guest accompanists for soloists will be Julie Chamberlain and Angela Lowry of the Catawba Music Department.

The performance is free and the public is cordially invited. Seating will be available on a first-come-first-served basis. Tables as well as general seating will be available.
