A student-directed Italian farce, "We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay!" by Dario Fo, is Catawba College's second theatre production of the fall 2012 season. The show runs in Catawba's black box Florence Busby Corriher Theatre at 7:30 p.m. from October 2-6, and because it contains mild strong language, would be most suitable for young adults.
While an Italian farce might sound irrelevant to a contemporary American audience, the play and its characters are surprisingly current and will have theatre-goers laughing one moment and sitting in stunned silence the next.
"We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay!"is directed by senior Jeffrey Salerno of Lake Mary, Fla., who is advised by Dr. Beth Homan. It features student designer, sophomore Chelsea Retalic of Concord, whose costume design is overseen by Professor Erin B. Dougherty. Senior Leana Guzman of Charlotte serves as assistant lighting designer to Professor Christopher Zink. The play features a set designed by Professor David Pulliam.
The tight-knit ensemble cast features senior Gabriella Bressi of Villanova, Pa.; sophomore Verity Pryor-Harden of Abilene, Texas; senior Sean Henderson of Concord; senior Adam Weiner of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and sophomore Michelle Newberger of Lutz, Fla.
This production is supported and produced entirely by student volunteers and the Blue Masque, the largest and oldest club on campus. The production staff includes senior John Millbank of Carrboro; freshman Ashleigh Moore-Orlowski of Virginia Beach, Va.; senior Sara Coon of Dallas, Texas; and junior Jura Davis of Charlotte.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for non-Catawba students and senior citizens, with group discounts available. Tickets may be purchased online at www.catawba.edu/theatretix or at the box office on the nights of the performance. For more details, call the Catawba College Theatre Box Office at (704) 637-4481.
