At 7 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant High School, five women ages 18 to 23 will compete for the title of Miss Cabarrus County 2007 and a $1,500 scholarship. The winner will advance to the Miss North Carolina Pageant in June in Raleigh.
The Miss Cabarrus County pageant, a preliminary competition to the North Carolina and Miss America pageants, will culminate in the crowning of the winner by current titleholder Dusti Kempf.
Admission to the pageant is $12 at the door for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.
Also Saturday, three young women ages 15 to 17 who are not eligible for the main pageant will compete for the title of Miss Cabarrus County Outstanding Teen. The Outstanding Teen pageant awards will include the $500 entry fee to the state finals and the official crown. Competition categories include interview, fitness wear, talent, evening wear and onstage question.
Local winners will advance to the Miss North Carolina Outstanding Teen competition in June in Raleigh. The state winner will advance to the Miss America Outstanding Teen competition in August in Florida.
Brookelyn Riley, Cabarrus County Outstanding Teen 2007, will crown her successor.
Also Saturday, a youth pageant will begin at noon. It will crown winners in Tiny Miss (ages 3-5), Little Miss (6 to 8), Young Miss (9 to 12) and Teen Miss (13 to 17) divisions.
The contestants for Miss Cabarrus County:
• Holly Huffstetler, 23, of Kannapolis is seeking a bachelor's degree at Hillsborough College in Tampa, Fla. Her platform issue is "Music Education Awareness." She is the daughter of John and Gail Huffstetler.
• Christiana Lackey, 20, of Concord is seeking an associate degree at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. Her platform issue is "Human Papillomavirus Awareness." She is the daughter of Desiree Lackey.
• Anna Seagroves, 18, of Kannapolis is a history education major at East Carolina University. Her platform issue is "Right Decisions, Right Now." She is the daughter of David and Lori Seagroves.
• Amanda Sowards, 19, of Concord is working toward a bachelor's degree in communications at Catawba College. Her platform issue is "Making a Difference: Around the Corner — Around the World." She is the daughter of Lisa Sowards and the late Randy Sowards.
• Adriane Renee Watkins, 19, of Midland is seeking an associate degree in nursing at Cabarrus College of Health Sciences. Her platform issue is "Finding a Cure for Juvenile Diabetes." She is the daughter of Mike and Susan Watkins.
The contestants for Cabarrus County Outstanding Teen:
• Chasity Chapman, 15, of Concord is a sophomore at Mount Pleasant High School. Her platform issue is "Bringing Animals and Families Together."
• Chelsea Hammill, 15, of Gold Hill is a sophomore at Mount Pleasant High. Her platform issue is "Eat Smart, Move More ... America." She is the daughter of David and Laura Hammill.
• Memi Simpson, 17, of Kannapolis is a junior at A.L. Brown High School. Her platform issue is "Adoption -- The Caring Option." She is the daughter of Jan and Charles Simpson.
