At Catawba, students are encouraged to display the College's core values — Scholarship, Character, Culture, and Service — in all aspects of their life. Senior Jo’Rill Moore found an opportunity to join an organization that shares those values: Inspire the Fire (ITF).
ITF, a non-profit organization founded by 2006 Catawba College alumnus Dennis Reed, works to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their skills in the arts whether that is singing, dancing, visual arts, or one of the many other areas included in the arts.
Moore interned with ITF this past summer to gain additional knowledge and skills that correlate with his major, Music Business. It was through the Music Business program that Moore was able to get in touch with Dennis Reed to discuss internship opportunities.
Through the resulting internship, Moore got hands-on experience in the various areas in which the organization is involved. "I made flyers, organized events, took attendance for the ITF members, took pictures and videos of events, ran social media, composed and received emails for the organization which ties into organizing events, ran audio and even briefly learned about stage management."
However, the skills Moore gained weren’t merely due to the tasks he completed. "I definitely gained the ability to be more self-confident. The internship helped me to communicate with many more people than I typically would interact with and to be more persistent in accomplishing tasks."
Through his internship, Moore was able to get some great advice from his supervisor, Dennis Reed. "Dennis told me to always take advantage of every opportunity I get, and he told me to never be afraid to network and interact with as many people as I can."
With his internship finished and his experiences documented, Moore offers this piece of advice to those considering an internship: "Be persistent and willing to step outside of your comfort zone, because behind what you don’t know how to do, or what you are afraid to do, could be hidden potential that could lead you to greatness."
