On February 6th and 7th, 2015, Catawba College competed in the 2015 NCICU Ethics Bowl as a first-time participant. From a pool of 20 institutions, Catawba’s team drew Pfeiffer University, Barton College, Gardner-Webb University, and Chowan University as opponents.
While victory eluded this year’s team, the students from Catawba represented the institution well and enjoyed the opportunity to network with fellow students, judges, moderators, and sponsors during a Friday night dinner reception and throughout the competition.
Students from Wake Forest University won the 2015 NCICU Ethics Bowl, a two-day competition at the Campbell University School of Law in Raleigh that attracted more than 100 students from 20 of North Carolina's independent colleges and universities. Barton College was runner-up in the fourth annual Ethics Bowl, which this year focused on ethics in education. Teams from High Point University and Methodist University also competed in two semi-final matches.
Catawba’s students, Blake Brewer, Justin Burroughs, Sarah Bushey, Brianna Gordon, Michael Downum, and Shelby Wellmon, comprised the travel team to Raleigh, and each participated in at least two rounds of competition. Dr. Ken Clapp, Dr. Norris Feeney and Dr. Charlie McAllister offered guidance to the team as they prepared for the 2015 NCICUEthics Bowl.
The team would like to publicly thank the Pfeiffer University team and its campus coordinator, Dr. Kevin Taylor, for their time and assistance during a late-January joint practice session at Black Lake. During this year’s event, current team members took the initiative to propose potential practice sessions to nearby participating institutions in the coming year. Catawba looks forward to preparing for and competing in the 2016 NCICU Ethics Bowl, where the tentative topic is the ethics of technology.
