Catawba College's Diversity Club has planned some activities in celebration of Black History Month. These activities include two programs that are open to members of the Rowan-Salisbury community.
A free showing of "The Great Debators," starring Denzel Washington, kicks off the month. The movie will be shown beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8 in Tom Smith Auditorium and refreshments will be provided. This event is open only to members of the Catawba College community.
An original play, "Little Rock: Our Dreams. Our Goals. Their Story," written and directed by junior theatre arts major Tony Mullins of Charlotte, will open with a 7 p.m. curtain on Thursday, Feb. 19 in Hedrick Little Theatre on campus. Other performance dates and times include 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20; and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21. An open discussion with cast, crew, faculty and students will immediately follow each performance. The play is free and open to the public, but because seating in the theatre is limited, reservations are encouraged and can be made via e-mail by contacting Chris Young at cryoung@catawba.edu. Catawba College junior theatre arts major Yolanda Kay McClure of Eden is coordinating a Fashion Show between 8 and 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27 in the Cannon Student Center. Clothing for this event will by provided by Rainey Slade and proceeds from the sale of the modeled clothing will go to benefit the Rockingham County Pregnancy Center. While admission to the Fashion Show is free, attendees are asked to make purchases to benefit a good cause.
Free entertainment and free dessert will be offered during "House of Soul" which runs from 7 until 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28 in Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center. Admission, though free, is open only to Catawba College students.
