“By making small changes, we can make a big difference,” Catawba College Senior Connor Coleman recently told a small gathering of faculty, staff and students. His comment was made at the conclusion of an on-campus presentation concerning student-developed proposals to help “green” Catawba’s campus.
Coleman of Brecksville, Ohio, and classmate Junior Richard Bergeron of Florence, N.J., made the presentation. They, along with 19 fellow students, developed a wide variety of “green” proposals during a fall 2004 environmental science class, “Campus Greening,” led by Dr. John Wear, director of Catawba’s Center for the Environment.
In class, the students studied programs in place at other educational institutions, looked at Catawba’s unique attributes, and then came up with a comprehensive list of their own recommendations. And while their new proposals were presented in toto to the campus community, several of them have already been embraced by college administrators and are in the process of being implemented on campus.
