Catawba College’s fifth annual Manners Matter Dinner was an opportunity for students to learn the do’s and don’ts of proper etiquette, dine in style, and learn which fork to use when they eat Caesar Salad.  The Dinner was held in the Hurley Room of the Cannon Student Center on November 16th.

The Career Services office hosted this tradition-in-the-making with the help of Dr. Ken Clapp, chaplain and senior vice president; Dr. Darin Spencer, assistant professor of accounting; Ms. Lindsey Griffin, associate director of admissions,  Mrs. Shelley Tyler-Smith, director of Internships; and Mrs. Robin Perry, director of career services; serving as the wait staff.

Etiquette gurus from Sailsbury, Shari Graham ’83 and Henrietta Henderlite, brought their very best tips to share with students including what spoon/fork to use when, where to place the napkin when the meal is complete through, how to use the soup spoon, and to always pass the salt and pepper together!  These tips and others shared were ones that students can utilize to help them make that good impression during a meal time interview or a business gathering.

Students were asked to RSVP for their spot at the table and come dressed to impress. They dined on a three-course meal including Wild Rice and Mushroom Soup, Caesar Salad, Chicken Francese, Bowtie Pasta, Rolls and Steamed Broccoli.  Everyone loved the Peppermint Bark Chocolate Mousse for dessert.

Lisa Strupe, a senior Recreation Therapy major from Mooresville, N.C., enjoyed the event. “It was a great evening of both fellowship and learning,” she said, adding, “and a great meal too!”
