America's Internet-connected and consumer-driven culture are scrutinized in Catawba College's production of "Pterodactyls," presented at 7:30 p.m. October 4-7 in Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on campus. This dark comedy by Nicky Silver offers an intriguing depiction of personal growth.
The storyline occurs within the confinements of privilege and security. The Duncan family, with the added company of Tommy Mckorckle, comfortably goes about the shallowness of their lives until their lavish lifestyle gets a surprise attack from reality. The family then finds itself confronting serious issues ranging from AIDS to alcoholism, drug dependency and molestation. Eventually, all family members are forced to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and one another.
The production is directed by senior McKenna Dabbs of Nashville, Tenn., with junior Christopher Young of Baltimore, Md. serving as stage manager and junior Nicholas Luisi of Pittsgrove, N.J., as assistant stage manager. Cast members include senior Nikolas Kear of Gatlinburg, Tenn., as Tommy; sophomore Drew Hepler of Knoxville, Tenn., as Arthur; sophomore Sara Johnson of Matthews as Grace; junior Sara Scronce of Newton as Emma; and senior Catori Swann of Hickory as Todd. Swann also serves as the technician responsible for fight choreography in the play.
