2015 marks the 12th anniversary of Catawba College's Thanksgiving Duck Draw project. Over the past 11 years, the project has helped provide over 1,480 families with Thanksgiving meals. This year, the goal is to feed an additional 150 families and reach the 1,630 families fed mark.
Once again, the Residence Life staff will be collecting money for the annual Thanksgiving dinner "Duck Draw." The Residence Life staff will be collecting $1 donations to sponsor a duck between September 18th and November 13th at 5 pm.
On November 17th, 2015 starting at 11:00 am, College President Brien Lewis will draw a number of ducks randomly in Leonard Lounge of the Cannon Student Center. The person sponsoring the ducks that are drawn will receive a prize. Prizes will include donated gifts such as gift certificates from local restaurants.
Resident Assistants will be visiting offices, residence halls, and community members to collect donations. To sponsor a duck, stop by a table set up inside the Cannon Student Center at the lunch times during the next few weeks. Or, stop by the Student Affairs Office and ask to sponsor a duck. There are also other events the Residence Life staff is initiating to help generate enough money to provide Thanksgiving dinners for those in Salisbury-Rowan community. The first of these event to kick off support for this cause will be to duct tape Associate Dean and Director of Conduct, Housing and Residence Life Kara Ostlund to a wall just outside the Cannon Student Center on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 starting at 11:00 am. The cost to participate in this event is $1 for a foot of duct tape.
Through last year's efforts, Residence Life was able to provide Thanksgiving dinners for approximately 150 local families. The staff worked with local school agencies to identify families who needed assistance during the holiday. The dinners consisted of a 10-12 lbs. turkey, baking pan, rice, cranberry sauce, green beans, corn, stuffing mix and box of brownie mix.
