Catawba College's fall 2012 production of "The Life of Galileo" was selected to compete at the American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) for Region 4 in Albany, Ga., in early February.
The Catawba Theatre Department will offer a special, free viewing of the production at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, the week prior to the competition, in Hedrick Theatre on campus. Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to attend.
"The Life of Galileo" was the College's first theatrical production of this academic year and enjoyed a run in Hedrick Theatre in mid-September. It was directed by Theatre Arts Professor Dayna Anderson and featured amazing images from the Hubble Telescope in a "planetarium show," as well as a spectacular set and costumes.
Written by Bertolt Brecht in 1938 during the rise of Nazi Germany, the play is set in 1610 and follows the meteoric rise to world recognition of Italian astronomer and the "father of science," Galileo. As Galileo's reputation grows and he argues politics, religion, science, human rights, sin and individual conscience, the Catholic Church wants to silence his voice.
Students from the Catawba who will travel to the ACTF competition as part of the Galileo Touring Company include senior Alicia Almodovar of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; junior Allison Andrews of Sherrills Ford; junior Jerry Archer of Candler; junior Jordan Clifton of Garner; senior Sara Coon of Dallas, Texas; junior Jura Davis of Charlotte; sophomore Tyler Elrod of Davidson; sophomore Matt Ensley of Concord senior Leana Guzman of Charlotte; senior Tatianna Long of Warrenton, Ore. junior Jacquelyn Loy of Burlington; junior Brianna Markle of Charlotte sophomore Ashley O'Donnell of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; sophomore Shannon O'Donnell of Land O'Lakes, Fla.; sophomore Ruby Osorio of Hickory; senior Collette Riddle of Roanoke, Va.; sophomore Iliana Rivera of Burlington; senior Rayshaun Sandlin of Knightdale; and freshman Sam Yeager of Elizabeth City.
