L-R: Pamela Thompson, DaQunda Magwood, Philip Bontumasi, and Cobey Abramowski
On Friday, October 13th, Cobey Abramowski of SAS in Cary, N.C., spoke to students in three classes at Catawba College. Classes participating were Business Data Analytics taught by Dr. Sasikarn Cook, Personal Finance taught by Dr. Mahsa Khoshnoud, and Foundations of Information Systems taught by Dr. Pamela Thompson.
During the talk, Cobey discussed her education at Carnegie Mellon in Engineering, her prior work experience at Shell and Rockwell Farms, and her move to an analytics career. Cobey left Rockwell Farms to pursue a master’s degree in Analytics from N.C. State University. After graduation, she accepted a position with SAS in Cary, N.C., as an Analytics Consultant and has been working there for three years. Cobey credits her work at Rockwell Farms for giving her business experience across many functional areas.
Cobey educated students on big data, the need for tools like SAS for data exploration and mining, the Internet of Things, and the importance of good communication skills in the workplace. SAS has over 14000 employees located in 59 countries. The company has experienced 40 straight years of growth. Cobey’s enthusiasm for data and technology was evident in her talk, and students had many questions during and after the presentation.
Catawba College students will begin to use Cloud-based SAS this semester as the Ketner School of Business works to enhance the analytics education across the curriculum for the business school.
