Catawba College will mark the 10th anniversary of 9-11 with several activities on campus, including a campus worship service, a 9-11 Panel Discussion, symbolic ringing of the carillon bells to note the time of the 9-11 attacks, and commemorative stickers designed and distributed by the SGA.
These 9-11 activities begin with the weekly campus worship service, slated at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6. At the service, remembering 9-11 will be theme. Chaplain and Senior Vice President Dr. Ken Clapp explains that worshippers at the service will form a circle and join hands on a long length of yellow ribbon, indicative of unity as a people of faith and as a nation. The ribbon will be cut into small pieces and each worshipper will shape their piece of ribbon into a lapel ribbon to pin on their clothing. It will be suggested that worshippers wear the ribbon each day between Sept. 7 and 11 to remind them of what we will mark on Sept. 11 with the tolling of the carillon bells on campus.
The SGA has designed and will distribute commemorative stickers to students on campus after the Labor Day Holiday, according to SGA President Yakir Malul. Malul says the hope is that the stickers will heighten the students’ awareness of 9-11 while allowing them to commemorate the anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
On Tuesday, Sept. 13, between 7 and 8:30 p.m., members of the Catawba faculty will offer a panel discussion about 9-11. This discussion, which is free and open to the campus community and to members of the community at large, will take place in Tom Smith Auditorium of Ketner Hall. Provost Dr. Richard W. Stephens notes that faculty panelists will share insights from their respective academic disciplines on the lingering effects of and changes wrought by 9-11. Panelists include Drs. Sheila Brownlow (chair of and professor of psychology), Gary Freeze (faculty senate chair and professor of history), Edith Bolick (dean of the School of Evening and Graduate Studies and professor of sociology), and Eric Hake (chair of and associate professor of economics). Dr. Carl Girelli, associate provost and professor of English, will serve as the panel moderator.
