"Recycling Works! Jobs, Profits & Opportunities for North Carolina's Communities" will be held at the Center for the Environment facility on Tuesday, April 17.
Co-sponsors for the event are Catawba County Utilities and Engineering, Carolina Recycling Association, Mecklenburg County Solid Waste, N.C. Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance, N.C. Solid Waste Association of North America, Rowan County Recycling and the Salisbury Post.
It will begin with an executive summary breakfast at 8 a.m. in Room 300 of the Center building. Recognized experts will talk about the benefits of recycling and the ways it can help communities meet the challenges that lie ahead.
Featured speakers will be Michael Shore, senior policy analyst with the Environmental Defense Fund; Paul Crissman, chief of the Solid Waste Section of the N.C. Division of Waste Management; and Bill Leonidas, director of business development with FCR Inc.
Session I will focus on improving local recycling programs. Representatives from cities and counties on the cutting edge of program improvement will speak on their recycling programs and why their citizens appreciate the services they offer.
Speakers will be Barry Edwards of Catawba County; and panelists Jim Hickman of the N.C. Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance; Lori Swaim of Rowan County; Mary McClellan of Kernersville; Linda Leighton of Raleigh; and Gayle Wilson of Orange County.
Session II, "Recycling Markets," will feature some of the state's leading recycling companies and will focus on the many ways to turn wastes into valuable commodities. Matt Ewadinger, manager of N.C. Recycling Business Assistance Center, will be the featured speaker, followed by a panel made up of Brett Rhinehardt of Computel IG Inc., Noel Lyons of McGill Environmental Systems, Tamsin Ettafagh of Envision Plastics, Shannon Anderson of Caraustar Recovered Fiber Group, Robert Gleaves of Blue Ridge Recycling and Grant Dickerson of Pallet One of North Carolina.
Session III, "Business Waste Reduction," will center on the opportunities businesses — from small enterprises to large corporations — have to reduce the amount of waste disposed from their facilities. A panel moderated by Lori Swaim of Rowan County will include Robert Owens of Frito-Lay, David Hunter of Rowan Regional Medical Center, Gregg Fox of Rowan-Salisbury School System and Danny Yount of ASMO N.C. Inc.
