The deadline to apply for the 2012 National Environmental Summit for High School Students has been extended to June 14.
The event, "Redesigning Our Future," is an intensive experience which is open to high school students who will be juniors and seniors in the 2012-2013 academic year. It will be held July 9-14 on the Catawba College campus.
"Applications arrive every day," says John Wear, executive director of the Center for the Environment at Catawba College. "We have students coming from Maine to Florida, from Colorado to Virginia. By extending the deadline, we hope to give students a few extra days to get all parts of their applications in at this very busy time of the school year."
Sustainability designers, scientists and engineers from the prestigious Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) of Colorado will collaborate with the Center for the Environment and Catawba professors to provide the leadership and instruction for the summit.
Participants will explore the concept of environmental leadership through the perspective of their own skills and interest in the arts, humanities, education, history, business, science and technology. They will learn how essential elements of these varied disciplines — creativity, expression, innovation, observation, experimentation and teamwork — are critical to their effectiveness as leaders.
The focus groups include everything from "Green Ink: Blogging for a Better Tomorrow" and "A Field Guide to the Poetics of Environmental Writing" to "Invasive Alien Plants and Animals: Friend or Foe to the Environment?" and "Sacred Spaces: Global Heritage and Conservation."
The summit will emphasize whole systems thinking, helping students become collaborative leaders and effective communicators. Summit leaders will help the students hone their analytical skills and give them the guidance they need to have a positive impact when they return to their schools and communities.

The Center for the Environment is accepting applications for the "National Youth Environmental Summit: Redesigning Our Future." The five-day experience for rising high school juniors and seniors, scheduled for July 20-24, 2011, is a rare opportunity for students from a variety of disciplines who are interested in becoming tomorrow's environmental leaders.

The cost is $300, which includes all meals, lodging and interactive instruction. A limited number of full and partial scholarships are avalaible.
