Dr. William Schlesinger, dean of Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, will speak Thursday, Sept. 9, at the Catawba College Center for the Environment on the college campus.            

Schlesinger, who also serves as the James B. Duke Professor in Biogeochemistry, will speak on climate change at 7:15 p.m. in Room 300. A 6:45 reception will precede the presentation, which is open to the public without charge.    

Schlesinger holds a bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth College and a doctorate from Cornell University. He has served as dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment since 2001. Prior to that, he was director of the Duke University Graduate Program in Ecology. He has also served on the faculty of the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Schlesinger’s expertise lies in global environmental change and focuses on chemical changes in the environment – especially soils -- that relate to changes in global climate. He has testified numerous times before U.S. Senate and House of Representatives subcommittees on everything from global climate change to desert protection.
