Catawba College invites you to enjoy A Fuller Night Out at the Downtown Catawba storefront from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5. We will be celebrating the publication of Dr. Janice Moore Fuller's newest book of poetry, "On the Bevel" with readings from Fuller and other Catawba poets whom she tutored in the craft.
A Fuller Night Out, which is free and open to the public, coincides with a 1st Friday in Downtown Salisbury.
Cheerwine and Moon Pies will be served at Downtown Catawba to those who drop by. Other poets slated to read from their works include Fuller's former students: Robin Tynes '12, Rebecca Rider '14, Kristie Hill '14, Allijah Motika '14, Chris Herring '11, Jubilee Meehan '13, Tina Romanelli '03, and Ty Stumpf '99. Current Catawba student, Shaun Cammack, will busk between poetry readings on his bass.
Fuller's "On the Bevel" was written during the period that Fuller worked to adapt William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" for the stage. Many of the poems, like Faulkner's novel, are about the burden of the body. They explore the question of what to do with the body after death and the struggle of having a body that ages and deteriorates.
Fuller is Writer-in-Residence and Professor of English at Catawba. "On the Bevel" is her fourth book of poems.
In his review of "On the Bevel," Fuller's longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Anthony S. Abbott, a Davidson College professor, called it "the richest, the deepest, the most fully human of Fuller's books." He noted two dominant sets of images within it: "the image of the bevel itself" and "the ongoing tension between light and gravity."
"These poems depict, stunningly, both the abiding mystery of the dark and that momentary weightlessness for which we all long," Abbott wrote.
Copies of Fuller's "On the Bevel" will be available for purchase from the author during A Fuller Night Out at Downtown Catawba on Sept. 5.
Catawba opened its Downtown Catawba storefront, near the corner of Main and West Innes Streets in the Plaza Building, in April of this year. Its purpose was to give the college a presence in downtown Salisbury and to help enhance Catawba's ties with the Salisbury community.
Downtown Catawba's regular hours of operation are 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The storefront will also be open at other times for special events and evenings. Look for more announcements concerning special offerings in the space in the very near future.
