The Catawba College Center for the Environment will offer a Field Sketching Workshop with illustrator David Williams on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Center for the Environment building and the Catawba Ecological Preserve, the workshop will enhance participants’ observation skills, introducing them to current and historical field sketching. Williams will lead participants in simple exercises to increase awareness of natural surroundings, sharpen observation skills and awaken creative energies.

Time will be allotted for participants to try their hand at field sketching and journaling with on-site demonstrations and a friendly question/answer critique at the end of the class. No previous art experience is required.
A designer and watercolorist, Williams specializes in biology and natural history. He has worked for zoos, aquariums, and environmental institutions and has taught field sketching, drawing and painting courses for museums and nature centers throughout the Southeast.

Williams holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from Western Carolina University. He has won several awards in graphic design and achieved a national ASHE Award for murals in a children’s emergency hospital.
In 1996, Williams established his company, Wingin’ It Works, combining two- and three-dimensional design.   His work can be seen at a number of science centers, including Discovery Place in Charlotte, Sci-Works in Winston-Salem, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton, Fla., and Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond, Va.

The workshop, which costs $20 for members of Friends of the Center for the Environment and $25 for non-members, is limited to 15 people. Participants are encouraged to bring their own journal, pad and pencils.
