For the fifth consecutive year, marching bands from Rowan and surrounding counties will compete in the Lord Salisbury Marching Band Classic at Catawba College on Saturday, October 2.
Ten marching bands, from counties in N.C., have registered to participate in the competition that begins at 2:00 p.m. in Catawba's Shuford Stadium. Bands from several Rowan County high schools will compete, along with bands from Cabarrus, Union, Stanly, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, and Davidson counties. Competing bands include East Montgomery, Salisbury, Independence, North Stanly, Central Cabarrus, William Hough, North Rowan, Porter Ridge, Piedmont and J.M. Robinson.
This year, students who are members of one of the competing bands had an opportunity to enter a Lord Salisbury Classic/Catawba Pride Scholarship contest. The contest offers the students an opportunity at one of five annual scholarships, to include one (1) top award of $2,500, if they apply and are accepted at Catawba and as a member of the Catawba Pride, the college's new marching band that will premier in fall 2011. These auditioned scholarships are renewable for as long as the student recipient remains in good standing throughout their studies at Catawba. Winners will be announced Oct. 2 during the Final Awards Ceremony at the Lord Salisbury Classic Marching Band Contest.
The Lord Salisbury Classic (LSC) is organized and run by the Catawba College Chapter 1002 of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference and sponsored in partnership with the Carolina's Medical Center — Northeast, the Rowan County Sherriff's Office, and High Note Music, as well as many other community sponsors and volunteers. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12. Concessions will be available, to include pizza, chicken sandwiches, soft drinks, bottled water, popcorn and other items will be on sale throughout the event. Programs containing information about each band and LSC t-shirts with the names of all bands competing will also be available for sale.
Catawba Spirit BandAll bands will compete in a preliminary round, beginning at 2 p.m. with five bands moving onto the finals competition, slated to begin at 7:20 p.m. In both tiers of competition, the bands will have a 30-minute warm-up period prior to their performance. Only five bands from the preliminary competition will move into the final competition and vie for the coveted LSC Cup.
The bands will be categorized according to size division — smallest to largest (A; AA; AAA; and AAAA), according to the number of wind instruments in each.
Bands will perform their marching shows in order to receive critiques, numerical scores, and ratings from a professional judging staff in categories of Music Execution, Marching Execution, General Effect, Drum Major, Percussion, and Color Guard. Trophy awards ceremonies will be held at 6:00 p.m. after the Preliminary competition and again at 9:15 p.m., following Finals competition.
Each size division will be awarded a first, second or third place trophy for their ratings in all categories, and are eligible for the coveted Lord Salisbury Cup, which is presented to the highest overall rating for the day, regardless of class size.
The contest will begin with the National Anthem performed by the Catawba Pride. The Catawba Pride will also offer an exhibition performance at 5:30 p.m. between preliminary and final performance rounds.
