in Science |
The 53 students were selected from 280 applications received from girls enrolled in 40 different schools in Rowan, Stanly and Iredell counties.

Catawba Conservation Camp (C3) includes all meals, a weeklong stay in a residence hall and daily activities. Participating students not only stay in a college dorm, but they band birds, explore lakes and woods, identify and tally plant life, explore amphibian and aquatic life such as frogs, fish and turtles, examine insects, and make new friends who love science. C3 director is Dr. Cyndi Osterhus, director of Catawba's Academy for Teaching. Science instruction will be facilitated by a team of public school teachers and Catawba faculty led by Dr. Joe Poston, chair of biology at Catawba College.
The camp, funded through a grant from Burroughs Wellcome Fund, is an effort to interest girls in the environmental sciences. The grant allows funding for all costs, except for a student's $25 non-refundable registration fee and transportation to and from the college.
