This academic year, Catawba College will complete a Habitat for Humanity home in Rowan County. To kick off this year’s Habitat build, a group of students from two First-Year Seminar courses set the floor joists on the home on Saturday, August 28th.
Service is one of the core values of the College, as reflected in the official Catawba College seal. The instructors for these courses—Dr. Philip Burgess, Associate Professor of Music, and Dr. Norris Feeney, Associate Professor of Politics—chose to cap off the initial full week of classes with this opportunity for first-year students to learn about the value of service through active experience.
As with previous years, the Catawba Habitat project is coordinated through Johnathon Boles and his leadership of Volunteer Catawba as part of Catawba College’s Lilly Center for Vocation and Values. Dr. Feeney’s First-Year Seminar group is part of the Catawba College Honors Program and they led off the Program’s first Day of Service for the fall 2021 semester.
Over the course of the fall semester, various student and alumni groups are scheduled to complete work on the Habitat for Humanity house. The College Honors Program will have another day of service centered on supporting the Habitat home-building project, and several Catawba athletic teams are committed to serve other weekends. Drs. Burgess and Feeney are grateful for the opportunity provided to these first-year students by Habitat for Humanity and Volunteer Catawba.
