D.G. Martin, President of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Fund, has hosted UNC-TV's "North Carolina Bookwatch," the state's premier literary series, for the past 13 years. At the January 15th Catawba College Community Forum, Martin will describe lessons he has learned about North Carolina's rich literary traditions while hosting Bookwatch. The forum, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Tom Smith Auditorium of Ralph W. Ketner Hall.
Martin has also written numerous book reviews and feature articles for journals and magazines and co-authored the North Carolina entry in the Encyclopedia Britannica. A feature series he produced for Our State Magazine later became the book, Interstate Eateries. A second edition of that book was released in 2008. About 40 North Carolina newspapers carry Martin's weekly newspaper column that features books, politics, and related topics.
A graduate of Davidson College and Yale Law School and a former Green Beret, Martin practiced law in Charlotte for 20 years before joining the University of North Carolina, where he served as Vice President for Public Affairs and chief legislative liaison. Since his retirement he has served in interim leadership positions at UNC-Pembroke, North Carolina Central University, Trust for Public Land, Triangle Land Conservancy, and North Carolina's Clean Water Management Trust Fund. In May 2008, Wingate University awarded him an honorary degree. He and wife Harriet have two children and four grandchildren.
