Dix, a Story of the Back-Ward Women is a new show by local Salisbury playwright and poet Janice Fuller. The play will be offered at Lee Street Theatre in collaboration with TapRoot Ensemble in its East Coast Premiere. ;

Originally written and developed for the Minneapolis Fringe Festival, Dix explores the lives of nurses and patients at the Dorothea Dix Hospital. The play was originally written in 2004 and was inspired by the life and poetry of Dorothea Dix Hospital nurse Juanita Tobin Brown. This rough and raw piece embraces the humanity of the women as each story of brokenness and pain manifests itself onstage. The latest incarnation features further developments in the story of an older nurse, based on Brown herself, and a younger nurse meeting patients who share their stories of love, loss and survival. Lee Street Theatre is excited to partner with new Charlotte Theatre group, Taproot Ensemble, who will premier a new perspective on this text with additions and developments that arise from a focus on devised theatre.
