Dr. Janice Fuller, a local poet and Catawba College’s writer-in-residence, will have one of her poems included in the July 20 broadcast of “The Writer’s Almanac,” a daily radio program hosted by Garrison Keillor.   Fuller’s “My Aunt Raises Violets from Africa” will be read on the program which is broadcast to about 280 non-commercial public radio stations around the country.

Audio from this program, which is produced by Minnesota Public Radio, will also be streamed and archived on the MPR website at almanac.mpr.org. Text from the poem will also be available on this website.   Each edition of “The Writer’s Almanac” includes a list of culturalEvents and anniversaries, many associated with literature and literary figures, and concludes with a poetry reading.

Fuller’s poem was one included in her book of poetry published in 2004 and entitled “Sex Education.”   The poems were written over a 10-year-period, some during residencies in Spain, Scotland, and Wales, others at different writers’ colonies or workshops, and some during Fuller’s sabbatical in 2001.   A few of the older poems had been included in Fuller’s chapbook.

“Even though the book is called “Sex Education,” a title that was suggested by renowned feminist critic and poet Sandra Gilbert, the book is more about education and gender roles, than it is about sexuality,” Fuller explained shortly before “Sex Education” was published.   “What binds the poems together is the notion about how women learn to be women in all their various capacities and roles — how to be a mother, a wife, a lover, and a daughter.”
