Income from a new fund established at Catawba College will help underwrite the cost of volunteerism. The Olivia Morgan Najarian Fund for Volunteerism was recognized at the February 15th Campus Ministry/Lilly Center Dinner held in Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus.
The fund was established by Dena Fraley Najarian '94 and husband David Najarian '97, both alumni of Catawba, in memory of their infant daughter who died in August of 2008. When Dena's father, Wayne Fraley, died in January of this year, the Najarians requested that memorial gifts in his memory be directed to Olivia's Fund.
Dena and David Najarian, along with Dena's mother, Dottie Fraley, were on hand at the event to hear the announcement made by Catawba student Kendra Joyner of Petersburg, Va.
The Olivia Morgan Najarian Fund was the third such fund to be established in less than a year and a half to help fund volunteerism at the College. The Joyce Caddell Fund for Volunteerism was announced in April 2009 at the annual Campus Ministry/Lilly Center Dinner event. Salisbury attorney Thomas Caddell has established to honor his wife who was a member of the Catawba faculty for more than 20 years before her retirement in 2008. Another fund, the Rintz-Pederson Endowed Fund for Volunteer Service, was created last spring by Peg Pederson '58 and husband Ronald of Latham, N.Y. The Pedersons, who have been active volunteers throughout their lives, spend a good portion of their time now volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. The income from these funds will also be used to promote and support volunteer efforts of Catawba students, faculty and staff.
Persons wishing to contribute to the Olivia Morgan Najarian Fund for Volunteerism, to the Joyce Caddell Fund for Volunteerism or to the Rintz-Pederson Endowed Fund for Volunteer Service may send contributions, designated appropriately, to the Lilly Center for Vocation and Values, 2300 West Innes Street, Salisbury, N.C. 28144.
