Catawba College’s scholarship program has been revamped with new criteria and deadlines now in place.  Since scholarship dollars tend to go fast, students of strong academic ability are encouraged to apply for admission to the College early and to submit the supplementary materials required for scholarship consideration.

According to Dr. Russell Watjen, Catawba’s vice president and dean of admissions, academic scholarships available only to first-year students for the ’06-’07 academic year will range from $3,000 to full tuition.  These include the prestigious First Family and the Presidential Scholarships.

Consideration for the First Family Scholarship is by invitation only, Watjen said, with two separate competitions scheduled.  The first competition is slated on campus November 18 and 19, and the second, on February 17 and 18.  Those invited to compete must first apply and be accepted for admission to Catawba, and then compete the Early Scholarship and Financial Aid Estimator.  They are also required to provide a recommendation from a teacher or administrator, and submit a 350-500 word essay by October 14 for the November competition and by January 13 for the February competition.

Watjen encourages those interested in the scholarship competitions to review criteria outlined on the College website under Financial Assistance to see if they meet the qualification criteria and then to apply for admission and submit the necessary paperwork by the dates outlined.  Prospective students with questions should contact the Office of Admissions directly at 1-800-CATAWBA.
