“Not all who wander are lost,” J.R.R. Tolkien wrote. However, those who are wandering will likely appreciate Salisbury’s new wayfinding signs as they use them to locate Catawba College.
Catawba administrators are thrilled because they say the signs will help make the College more accessible, especially for first-time visitors like prospective students and their families.
“We are so pleased that the Visitors and Convention Bureau made this investment for our community and proud that Catawba is a direct beneficiary,” Catawba President Brien Lewis said.
Reflecting on Salisbury’s character and history, the new signs feature photographs from buildings and sites in the community. From Catawba’s point of view, ease in locating and also realizing community assets are especially important to prospective families as they narrow the educational choices for their students.
“We have a community robust with theatre, museums, shopping and dining options, but if you don’t know how to get to these assets you could miss out on so much of what is here,” Lewis concluded.
The initial phase of the three-phase project is currently being installed in downtown Salisbury and along the Innes Street corridor. The project features 11 directional signs and 3 downtown pedestrian signs pointing the way to Catawba. Catawba’s wayfinding signage will be installed on Innes Street at North Shaver Street, Fulton Street, Grove Street, Link Street, and Statesville Boulevard. Signs will be installed on Jake Alexander Boulevard at Klumac Road, South Main Street, Castlewood Road, and Brenner Avenue. The Brenner Avenue signs will be installed at Monroe Street and Statesville Boulevard. Catawba’s downtown wayfinding signage will be located at Innes Street and Main Street, and on North Main Street at Council Street and Innes Street.
