Members of Catawba College's chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) recently marked National Chemistry Week (October 20-26) by inviting a class of fourth grade students from North Hills Christian School to a chemistry demonstration on Catawba's campus.
The North Hills students learned about the concept of energy through a variety of presentations and demonstrations provided by Catawba's chemistry students. They learned how to silver glass bottles, the science behind a homemade roller coaster, all about elephant toothpaste (a reaction that emits suds), and the chemistry of glow sticks. Catawba students also assisted the students from North Hills in the lab as they made slime.
ACS member Linda Castillo of China Grove, a senior chemistry major at Catawba, described her group's activities with the North Hills students like this: "Overall, they had a blast and so did we!"
Dr. Mark Sabo, professor and chair of chemistry, serves as advisor to Catawba's chapter of ACS. Catawba students involved in the North Hills Christian School demonstration in addition to Castillo included Amber Williamson of Lexington, Mary Podgorak-Lagro of Salisbury, Christian Krzykwa of Wilmington and Frank Villa Hernandez of Kannapolis.
