Piedmont High School Marching Panthers Wins Lord Salisbury Competition

Piedmont High School Marching Band from Monroe was awarded Grand Champion and winner of the 2007 Lord Salisbury Cup during the second annual Lord Salisbury Marching Band Classic held Saturday, October 13 at Catawba College. Piedmont, under the direction of Jody Lukac, obtained an impressive overall score of 91, out of a possible 100 points.

Other top place bands included Ledford High School from Davidson County, under the direction of Mike Howell and the Grand Champion winner of the 2006 Lord Salisbury Cup, finished in second place overall, with an overall score of 89. North Rowan High School from Rowan County, under the direction of Keith Howe, finished in third place overall, with a score of 84. A score of 80 to 100 points constitutes a Superior rating — a rating that represents the highest in performance caliber as judged by a panel of professionals in their respective categories.

Over 3,000 people attended the event and watched 14 different bands compete. The bands were categorized according to size division — smallest to largest (A; AA; AAA; AAAA; and AAAAA), according to the number of wind instruments in each band. Major adjudicated captions are in Music Execution, Marching Execution, and General Effect. Minor (more individualized) adjudicated captions are in Drum Major, Percussion and Colorguard/Auxiliary Units. Each class size division was eligible for first, second and third place awards in all of the major categories.

Marching bands which competed attained the following rankings:

Class A — Salisbury High School was the first place winner in this class size, while Vance High School finished second, and North Stanly High School finished third. They were ranked in the following categories: Percussion: Vance, first place, Salisbury, second, and North Stanly, third; Visual Ensemble: Vance, first place, North Stanly, second, and Salisbury, third; Drum Major: Vance, first place, Salisbury, second, and North Stanly, third; General Effect: Salisbury, first place, Vance, second, and North Stanly, third; Marching: Vance, first, Salisbury, second, and North Stanly, third; Music: Salisbury, first place, North Stanly, second, and Vance, third.

Class AA — North Rowan High School was the first place winner in this class size, while Magna Vista High School from Ridgeway, VA finished second, and West Rowan High School came in third. They were ranked in the following categories: Percussion: Magna Vista, first place, North Rowan, second, and West Rowan, third; Visual Ensemble: Magna Vista, first place, North Rowan, second, and West Rowan, third; Drum Major: Magna Vista, first place, North Rowan, second, and West Rowan, third; General Effect: North Rowan, first place, Magna Vista, second, and West Rowan, third; Marching: North Rowan, first place, Magna Vista, second, and West Rowan, third; Music: North Rowan, first place, Magna Vista, second, and West Rowan, third.

Class AAA — East Rowan High School from Rowan County was the first place in this class size, while South Caldwell High School from Morganton, N.C., finished second, and Jesse C.
