Poet and novelist Alan Michael Parker will read from his work at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, October 18, in Catawba College's Tom Smith Auditorium in Ketner Hall. The reading, sponsored by the College's English Department, is free and open to the public.
Parker has written three novels, Cry Uncle, Whale Man (WordFarm, 2011) and The Committee on Town Happiness (Dzanc Books, 2014), along with seven collections of poems. His poems have appeared in The American Poetry Review, The Gettysburg Review, Kenyon Review, The New Republic, The New Yorker, Paris Review, Pleiades, and The Yale Review, among other magazines, and in 2011 was anthologized in The Best American Poetry as well as The Pushcart Prize. His prose has appeared in journals including The Believer, The New York Times Book Review, and The New Yorker.
The winner of three Pushcart Prizes, he received his M.F.A. in Writing from Columbia University, where he studied with Carolyn Forche, Richard Howard, Denis Johnson, Stanley Kunitz, William Matthews, and Nobel Laureates Joseph Brodsky and Czeslaw Milosz.
Since 1998, Parker has taught at Davidson College, where he is Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing. He is also a Core Faculty Member in the Queens University low-residency M.F.A. program.
