School of Performing ArtsFor the 27th year this fall, Catawba College's Community Music program will be providing musical instruction for children and adults in the Rowan-Salisbury area. The program, under the direction of Erin Harper and with the addition of some instructors, offers a wide variety of classes, everything from private piano lessons to a new class called Exploring Music Theory.
New instructors in the program include Beth Yelvington as director of Children's Chorale class that meets at 5 p.m. each Thursday; Kelly Edwards and Anna McKinzie as new private piano instructors; Julie Dean, a junior at Catawba, instructing a class called Broadway Music; and Blakley Leonard, a senior at Catawba, teaching Guitar and Songwriting.
A new class is being offered in the Community Music program this fall – Exploring Music Theory for ages 15 and up will be taught on Thursday evenings between 6 and 7 p.m. Students can learn the basics of reading music, rhythm, key signatures, chording and much more. The instructor for the course is Dean Orbison who is certified in Advanced Placement Music Theory.

Catawba's Community Music program began in 1984 with only 12 students enrolled in a Music and Movement class using Orff-based music concepts. Now, as it enters its second quarter century, it has grown to serve more than 100 students each semester and to offer a Musikgarten program, vocal ensembles for children and youth, instrumental ensembles for youth, songwriting classes, piano classes, drama classes, and private instruction on almost any instrument.

• Songwriting Class (for ages 12 and up)
• Exploring Music Theory (for ages 15 and up)
All classes begin the week of September 12th and end December 11th with recitals.
