Nancy Adams of Salisbury, an assistant professor of English at Catawba College, was recognized for her years of service to the institution at the College's 10 a.m. Commencement Exercise on May 12. Adams will retire after 16 years of service, effective June 1, 2007.
Adams joined the Catawba College community in 1991 as division secretary for humanities. She became a Catawba employee a scant four years after she, at age 39, and her daughter Cari entered the College as freshmen students together in 1987.
As a student, Adams was consistently on the dean's list and the presidential honor roll. She served as vice president of Alpha Chi National Honorary Society and as projects co-chairman of the Phi Epsilon Honorary Scholastic Society. She was the recipient of both the Martha H. Morehead Award and the Calvin Koonts Poetry Award, awards given annually by the English Department for writing excellence.
While Adams juggled home, work, and school to complete her undergraduate degree, she also set a new goal for herself; she wanted to teach college English and to continue writing after her summa cum laude graduation from Catawba. She did just that, earning her master's degree from the University of North Carolina Charlotte which enabled her in 1995, to return to teach fulltime in the English Department at Catawba.
