A Rowan County Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony held September 2 seemed to affirm the Downtown Catawba location as part of the downtown Salisbury community.
Although the College has had a presence in downtown Salisbury since early April, the ribbon cutting was scheduled after the start of the new academic year. College officials believe this innovative "storefront" space in the Plaza Building, near the corner of Main and West Innes Streets, will further enhance Catawba's ties with the Salisbury community.
Catawba College President Brien Lewis said Downtown Catawba demonstrates the college's "commitment to Salisbury as an active community participant."
Lewis, assisted by Elaine Spalding, president of the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce, cut a red ribbon with a pair of oversized scissors to signify the storefront's official opening. Also on hand were Salisbury Mayor Paul Woodson, Jr.; Salisbury Mayor Pro-Tem Maggie Blackwell; Salisbury City Council Member Karen Kirks Alexander; Executive Director of RowanWorks Robert Van Geons '97; Kannapolis City Council Member Ryan Dayvault '08; Rowan-Salisbury School System Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody; Executive Director of the NSSA Dave Goren; Executive Director of Rowan Helping Ministries Kyna S. Grubb '89; and Salisbury Post Publisher Greg Anderson. Panera Bread of Salisbury provided goodies for the ribbon cutting and Jason Miller, general manager, and Ashley Ketner, marketing director, were in attendance.
Downtown Catawba features Admissions information about the College as well as the latest on athletic, theatre and music events (and the opportunity to buy tickets for these). Catawba clothing and related items are also available for purchase. Special programming is periodically offered at the storefront location, including musical performances, readings, and other presentations. Regular Downtown Catawba hours are 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
