November 1, the City of Salisbury Fire Department opened a satellite office on the campus of Catawba College.   The office, staffed by Captain Doug Stevens, is located in Jann House on Summit Avenue.

;

Salisbury Fire Chief Robert Parnell says the opening of the new satellite office is another step toward the department’s goal of "increasing our fire safety presence on the campuses of Catawba, Livingstone and Rowan-Cabarrus Community colleges."   Although Catawba is the first of the institutions to make space available, Parnell says he anticipates satellite offices to open on the other two campuses in the near future, putting inspectors into areas where they are needed most.

;

"Having Captain Stevens on site provides a first-hand fire safety resource for Catawba’s facilities, administration, and students," Parnell explains.   "If they have a question or a concern, it can be addressed directly with the fire inspector there.   We want him to be more than an enforcement arm of our department.   We want him to be a resource for the community – not just the Catawba community, but anyone from the city can come over and speak to him."

;

Stevens notes that in addition to training he will provide on campus, he can also issue permits for both tents and burning to city residents, and his new office will serve as a recruiting office for individuals interested in employment with the Salisbury Fire Department.   Parnell envisions even more partnerships between his department and the colleges in the future.

;

Stevens joined the Salisbury Fire Department in 1984, after he retired as fire marshal in Brevard County, Fla.   At that time, he recalls that the department was "behind the times in equipment," especially radio equipment.   Today, he credits proactive city leaders with providing his department with the best equipment available.

;

The Salisbury Fire Department operates three fire stations – one on West Innes Street, one on East Innes Street, and one on South Main Street.   In addition to the satellite office on Catawba’s campus, the department operates another office in the Park Avenue neighborhood.
