The Fourth Annual Brenna Lee Lawrence Spreading Wings Scholarship Benefit was held July 14, 2007 in Jamestown, N.C. Over 100 people were in attendance at the dinner and silent auction which raised funds to be added to the Brenna Lee Lawrence Endowed Scholarship which was established in 2006 by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Brent Lawrence, as a means of memorializing Brenna and assisting deserving Catawba students.

Over $20,000 has been contributed to the scholarship fund by family and friends of Brenna, a 2002 honors graduate of Catawba who majored in biology and minored in religion and philosophy. Brenna was very active on campus, serving as a cheerleader, a participant in campus worship leadership, president of Tri-Beta, a.member of Phi Epsilon and a member of the College Chapel Choir. She suffered from several auto-immune diseases, including Polymyositis, Raynaud's Fibromyalgia, and other ailments. Tragically, her medications left her susceptible to other diseases, and on April 14, 2004, at age 24, she died from a hospital-borne staph infection.

The 2007 benefit was attended by over 100 persons including a number of current and former Catawba students. Catawba staff members Doug ('04) and Amber (Rady, ‘01) Stanley provided major staffing assistance for the benefit. The Rev. Dr. Ken Clapp ('70) represented the College in expressing appreciation to all who were present in supporting the fundraiser. Parrothead music was provided by  Mike Hatchell.

The annual recipient of the Brenna Lawrence Scholarship shall be a student who has demonstrated a commitment to pursue a vocation that will involve service to others and who has demonstrated a commitment to high standards of moral values and a willingness to share this commitment with others. The scholarship is administered by the Lilly Center for Vocation and Values at Catawba.
