The Catawba College Community Music Program is now enrolling students for spring classes, ensembles and lessons. Providing quality music education and experiences for students of all ages and levels of ability for 25 years, Community Music is located on the campus of Catawba College.
Private instruction (30, 45 or 60 minute private lessons) is offered for students of all ages and levels of ability on the following instruments: piano (including contemporary and traditional styles), voice, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, violin, viola, cello, percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, and trombone. Experience, teaching styles, and availability vary from instructor to instructor, including Performing-Artist Teachers, Professional Teachers and Under-Graduate Teachers. We take great care in placing students with the most appropriate faculty member to foster interest and talent development. Catawba Children’s Chorale (ages 7-14)
Designed to provide opportunities for students (ages 7–14) to learn the fundamentals of good singing and musicianship, as well as to develop poise, confidence and good stage presence. Performance opportunities include performing on varied communityEvents and Catawba Community Music concerts. Repertoire for spring 2010 performances will focus on Broadway musicals including selections from Oliver, Annie, Les Miserables, and other musicals. Directed by Mrs. Randi Skaggs, the ensemble has limited enrollment and meets one hour per week for the fifteen-week session. By audition only. Auditions will be held Thursday, January 21 at 5:00pm, Hoke Building. Classes begin January 28 and meet Thursdays 4:00-5:00pm. Location: Hoke Building, Catawba College. Catawba Youth Chorale (grades 9-12)
Performance opportunities include singing at varied communityEvents, schools and Catawba Community Music concerts. Under the direction of seasoned choral director, Dean Orbison, high school students will have the opportunity to share their passion for singing as they learn a wide variety of repertoire and develop their vocal and performance abilities. Repertoire for spring 2010 will include selections from Broadway musicals including Wicked, Phantom of the Opera and other musicals. By audition only, the ensemble has limited enrollment and meets 90 minutes each week. Auditions will be held Tuesdays, January 12, 19 and 26 at 6:30pm in Williams Music Building. Weekly rehearsals will be held Tuesdays 7:00-8:30pm beginning January 26. Director, Dean Orbison. Call the Community Music Office for audition information. Scholarships are available.
Class Piano for Adult Beginners is offered to adults who always wanted to play piano but never had the opportunity. Students will learn important music fundamentals including music reading, music theory, aural training, and ensemble playing in a relaxed, stress-free classroom setting. Classes begin the week of January 26 and meet 50 minutes each week. Class Time TBA, Instructor, Tina Brown. Minimum enrollment must be met to offer class.
Spotlight on Musical Theatre (grades 6 to 9)
This class will focus on developing and using basic acting skills through improvisational exercises, character analysis, and creative movement. Vocal techniques for a healthy singing and speaking voice will also be explored. At the end of the module there will be a demonstration performance featuring selected scenes from Shrek, the Musical. Minimum enrollment to offer class is 5. Instructor: Emily Schuttenberg, MM, BA (musical theatre and piano); Tuesdays March 16-May 11 from 4:15- 5:30pm at the Music Annex (corner of Brenner & Corriher Ave.).
Songwriting Class (High-school Age through Adults)
This 50-minute class is designed to introduce students to the art and craft of songwriting. Topics will include melody, rhythm/style, harmony, form, and lyrics as well as the nature of aesthetics and the place of popular song within modern culture. Some background in music is required to take the course, but no formal training is necessary. Minimum Enrollment to offer class: 4; Class time TBA; Instructor, Derek Daisey.
Early Childhood Music Classes will be offered to provide musical opportunities for children ranging from infants to five-year-olds. Musikgarten is an early childhood music and movement program that offers a sequential plan for the musical development of a child.
Erin Harper will serve as the licensed instructor, offering seasoned instruction for children ages three months through age five. Designed for the entire family, this 30-minute class meets once a week each twelve week semester. Participate with your child in singing, chanting, moving, dancing, listening, and playing simple instruments — while developing a strong musical bond with your child. Through activities that bridge the natural connection between music and movement, your child's musical aptitude and listening abilities are enhanced and further developed.
Classes begin week of February 15, 2010. Available class times: Monday 10-10:30am; Tuesday 9:15-9:45am or 3:30-4:00pm; Wednesday 10-10:30am or 12:15-12:45; Thursday 11:00-11:30am or 6:00-6:30pm. Tuition discounts are available for families who enroll multiple children. Minimum enrollment must be met to offer classes.
