A group of Catawba College's first-year, first-generation students are visiting Washington, D.C., this week before spring semester begins thanks to a $100,000 CIC/Walmart College Success Awards grant.

Seventeen first-year students, all first-generation college students and members of this fall's NextGen first-year seminar, departed for the nation's capital Tuesday, January 4, accompanied by Associate Professor of Sociology, Dr. Maria Vandergriff-Avery, and Dr. Steve Coggin, Professor of Biology and Dean of the Hurley School of Arts and Sciences. They will visit Washington area museums, historical sites, government offices and Catawba College alumni while participating in their fully funded trip. They will return to campus in time for the start of spring semester classes on Jan. 11.

First-generation students making the trip include Brittany Allen of Tobaccoville; Matthew Blaker of Concord; Jonathan Buffkin of Supply; Juliana Conte of Hampton, Ontario; Anna Christopher of Dallas; Jacob Jester of China Grove; Tyrone Johnson of Fayetteville; Brendan Kennedy of Weddington; Kaitlyn Kersat of Clayton; Jake Krug of Concord; Jessica Morris of Charlotte; Timberly Motsinger of Winston-Salem; Jonas Nader of Monroe; Leanne Retundie of Mooresville; and Patsy Stafford of Lexington.
