Catawba College's chapter of Alpha Chi sent five student delegates to the Alpha Chi Super-Regional Convention in Little Rock, Arkansas, March 25-28. Dr. Bethany Sinnott, a professor of English at Catawba, accompanied the students as Faculty Sponsor.
Catawba's chapter received a certificate designating it as a Star Chapter, and one Catawba student, Kyle Ganow of State College, Pa., won an award for his presentation. (The top 10 percent of presenters in each region received the awards. Catawba's chapter is in Region III, which includes all the southeastern states.)

Kyle Ganow, "Bat Activity and Topography: Potential for Conflict between Bats and Wind Energy Development in the Texas Panhandle;" Andrea Clabaugh of York, Pa., "The Effects of Aversive Bias and Name Cues on Culpability;" and Stephanie Hill of China Grove, N.C., Laura Ritchie of Salisbury, N.C., and Elizabeth Sloop of Salisbury, N.C., "Social Cultural Theory and Implications on 'At Promise' Students."
Featured speakers were Carlotta Walls Lanier, author of A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School and member of the Little Rock Nine, the first black students to integrate Little Rock Central High School in 1967; and Carol H. Rasco, domestic policy advisor to President Bill Clinton, who spoke as part of a panel discussion at the Clinton Presidential Center. (The Catawba group also toured that Center.) Other panelists were Janis F. Kearney, Clinton's personal diarist, and James L. (Skip) Rutherford, advisor to President Clinton and supervisor of the planning for the Clinton Presidential Center.
Activities at the Alpha Chi conference included fundraising for Reading Is Fundamental (for which Ms. Rasco is Chief Executive Officer) and for Heifer International, the world headquarters of which are in Little Rock.
