Volunteers were matched with activities by Catawba's Coordinator for Community and Service Learning Melissa Geddings. Geddings joined Catawba in February and will spend a year on campus through the Americorps VISTA program.
The weeklong volunteer activities were the first that Geddings had coordinated since her arrival and she said she was pleased with the campus participation. "Everyone who volunteered seemed to take away much more than they put in," Geddings explained. "We were able to schedule some pretty diverse activities which I think appealed to a wider volunteer base on campus. My ultimate goal is help expose a greater swatch of the campus to the benefits of service to others."
Forty-nine students, three faculty, and four staff members volunteered during Catawba Cares Week of Service. Their volunteer efforts translated into 188 hours of service.
Geddings will continue to coordinate volunteer opportunities for the campus community during the '06-'07 academic year. In addition, she will periodically collaborate with the Career Development Office to offer on-campus sessions concerning how volunteer experiences can augment an individual's career development.
