Teddy Roosevelt rides again during a course being offered this spring through Catawba College's Lifelong Learning Program.  Dr. Al Riggs,  former professor of history at McGill University in Canada from 1988-2002, has retired to Salisbury and will be sharing his expertise on the Presidents Roosevelt (Theodore and Franklin) in this course.

The course, Theodore Roosevelt's America, 1876-1919, will examine Theodore Roosevelt's influence as a pioneer of progressive politics and reforms affecting both major political parties and the values they hold today.  The class will be offered every other Tuesday evening from 6-9:45 p.m. beginning January 10 and concluding May 2.   The course is open to members of the community for a $150 audit fee or may be taken for academic credit at the normal tuition rate.  For additional information, contact the Lifelong Learning Office at 704-637-4772.

Dr. Riggs holds his master's degree and doctorate in history from Yale University where he was both a Woodrow Wilson and a Yale University Fellow.  He taught history at McGill University from 1966 to 2002.  From 1988 to 2002, he served as chair of the North American Studies Program.  Author of numerous books and articles, he recently co-authored with Amelia Miller Romance, Remedies and Revolution: The Journal of Dr. Elihu Ashley of Deerfield, Massachusetts, 1773-1775 which is now in press at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
