Kevin Jasper remarks that “Hollerin’ in general is done all over the world, but…the Folk Art of Hollerin’ as it is practiced in Southeastern North Carolina’s Sampson County is unique to that area.” 

He should know.  Jasper has competed in the National Hollerin’ Contest in Spivey’s Corner every year since 1998. Except for his first year of competing, he has placed no lower than first runner up and has won the championship twice, once in 2000 and again in 2004.

The National Hollerin’ Contest, held in Spivey’s Corner each year on the third Saturday in June, “provides a means for helping to preserve the almost lost Folk Art of Hollerin’.”  In a multi- media presentation (including, of course, vocal demonstrations) at the next Catawba College Community Forum, Jasper will explore and explain the difference between the universal hollers done worldwide and the hollerin’ done in the Sampson County region.

Jasper grew up in the Winston-Salem/Greensboro area, earned a B.S. in Mathematics with a Computer Concentration from UNC-Greensboro, then went on to earn a second B.S. in Computer Science from North Carolina State University, followed by a Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.  He has worked in Information Systems for many years and has served as pastor at two churches.  He is currently a software developer in the Information Systems Department at Wake Forest University and is enrolled in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program at Wake Forest. 

As National Hollerin’ Champion, Jasper has appeared twice on the David Letterman Show as well as on “Live” with Regis and Kathie Lee.  He has also been seen on television news programs and heard as an interview guest on over a hundred radio stations worldwide.  He feels it is his “privilege and responsibility to educate the public in the Fine Folk Art of Spivey’s Corner Hollerin’.” 

 The Catawba College Community Forum is pleased to present Kevin Jasper at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 18, 2004, in Tom Smith Auditorium in Ralph W. Ketner Hall on the campus of Catawba College in Salisbury.  The event, which promises to be unique, informative, and entertaining, is free and open to the public.
