Bright lights in a big city don't always signal excitement and glamour. Catawba College's production of the musical "Bright Lights, Big City" explores the tumultuous and confusing aspects of one young man dealing with grief, loss and the feeling of nothingness in New York City.
"Bright Lights, Big City," with book, music and lyrics by Paul Scott Goodman, will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 through Saturday, Feb. 26, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27 in the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on Catawba's campus. It is a fast paced rock musical based on the novel of the same name.
The show follows Jamie, a young aspiring writer in New York City during the 1980s who is stuck in fact checking. When he loses his wife and job, his life spirals out of control as he turns to drugs and partying in the Manhattan nightlife. Theatregoers learn there is still hope for Jamie, though, in the promise of love and rekindling of family.
"Bright Lights, Big City" is student-directed by senior Zack Lynch of Selbyville, Del., and is a fully student-run production. Additional technical support includes Amber McCleerey of Hendersonville, choreographer; Katie Carpenter of Hickory, costume design; Ryan O'Hare of Milwaukee, Wis., set design; C.M. Garrison of Asheville, stage manager; and Jordan Clifton of Garner, assistant stage manager.
Cast members include Kylie Beinke of West Chester, Pa., as Mary O'Brien McCann; Courtney Cowman of Hamilton, N.J., as Coma Baby; Canaan Cox of Hendersonville, as Tad; Julie Dean of Greenwood, S.C., as Amanda; Ryan Glidewell of Marietta, Ga., as Chuck Bean; Autumn Hamilton of Atlanta, Ga., as Clara; Shanna Locklair of Lewes, Del., as Mother; Quinn McRae of Hendersonville, as Company; Jesse Siak of Hendersonville, as Jamie; Mara Stewart of Avon, Ind., as Vicky; and Adam Weiner of Cherry Hill, N.J., as Michael; and Mike Innis of Charlotte, Allison Andrews of Sherrills Ford, Danielle Smith of Charlotte, and TyNia Brandon of Charlotte, all as ensemble members.
